  1. The 4 Things All Successful Franchise Owners Have In Common

‘How much money will I make?’, is one of the first questions most people ask when they start looking into buying a franchise. The answer? How successful you are as a franchise owner really depends on you.

Yes, the franchise model, back-end support, systems and operations are all important – but while these elements set you up for success, achieving that success is something only you have the power to do.

Over the course of our 30+ years experience at O2E Brands, we’ve identified not only what makes a great franchise partner, but what makes a successful one: and there are a number of traits that they all have in common.

What are they, and do you have them? Read on to find out.

    Hungry

If you’ve decided you want to be a business owner, then you have to be all in. And to be all in, you have to really want it. You have to want to be your own boss. You have to crave taking control of your future. You have to be committed to changing your life by building something that is yours. You have to know that you’ll do whatever it takes to get there.

    Hard-Working

Running a franchise requires a strong drive and motivation for success, and that’s what we look for in our Franchise Partners. People who aren’t afraid of hard work. People who understand that sure, it might be tough at first – but that putting in the work now means reaping the rewards later. Successful franchisors are the ones who look at the big picture, not just the ‘right now’, and have a clear idea of where they want to take their business. They don’t just head into year 1 asking: ‘when is the money going to start rolling in?’ – they think about year 2, year 5, year 10: and work towards big goals.

    Hands-On

What it really comes down to, is this: you get out what you put in. Successful franchisors are those who want to dig in, roll up their sleeves, and be involved at every level of their business – especially in the early years. You’re building something from the ground up, you’re building a legacy, you’re building something you can be proud of – to do that, you have to be hands-on. If your team can see that you’re 100% committed, then they will be too.

    Happy

Obviously, nobody is relentlessly happy all of the time (that would be impossible, and a little bit terrifying). But what makes a good Franchise Partner is someone with great interpersonal skills and a positive outlook, combined with a ‘yes I can’ attitude. This is key when it comes to interacting with employees and customers, because creating loyalty, value and trust is the foundation of any successful business.

  2. This Former Retail Manager Took Control And Became A Business Owner

He’s a self-proclaimed die-hard sports fan with a ‘Type A’ personality and ambition by the bucketload. Meet Brian Bensema, Shack Shine Franchise Partner in Southwest Chicago, and discover why he chose franchising, what he loves about Shack Shine, and his plans for a million dollar business.

Hi Brian, welcome to the Shack Shine family! Let’s start things off with the big one: what made you want to own your own business?

I’ve been in retail management for close to a decade, maybe a little bit more – everything from store manager to operations manager. And the thing I found was that the more you work for other people, and the more hours you put in to make them a lot of money, the more you start to think ‘why not make that money for myself instead?’. For me, I knew how to run a business from the perspective of management, and so running a business as an owner felt like the logical next step.

Looking back at those initial thoughts that kick-started all this for you, how does it feel to be a business owner now?

The process has been exciting, nerve-wracking, terrifying, fun – if you have an adjective it’s probably the right one! It’s been almost 6 months since I first started that process – and it’s just so good, because you really learn about them, they learn about you, and they make you feel like family by the end of it. If it wasn’t like that I probably wouldn’t be here.

Now I’m just ready to get going. It’s a big thing to wrap your head around: that the buck stops with you. It’s your show, you win or you lose, it’s all based on you, not what people above you tell you. It’s big, but it’s liberating and it’s exciting.

    So why Shack Shine?

I actually found Shack Shine when I was looking to get 1-800-GOT-JUNK? to pick up some stuff for me, and I saw at the bottom of the website that the same company has other brands. I discovered that there were franchise opportunities at these other brands, and Shack Shine jumped out at me. That’s how it started!

The thing about Shack Shine is that unlike a lot of other businesses, it’s all about repeat business. So it’s not a model where I have to constantly keep finding new customers. Instead, as we build up over the years people will stick will us – they’ll remember the great customer experience, they’ll remember the first class work we did, and they’ll book with us again and again and again. That’s what really intrigued me to begin with.

It was definitely good to go out to Vancouver and see everything that’s behind Shack Shine too, at the head office ‘The Junktion’. To be honest, I was just relieved to see that it wasn’t somebody in a basement pretending to be a company! here are franchises like that in the world, I know people who went on a visit, and all of a sudden it’s just two people in a basement, so this obviously wasn’t like that at all. Instead it’s a huge office, so many people, so many great, friendly faces, such an amazing culture.

    Why Franchising?

The big thing about Franchising is you’re not doing it alone. I have a lot of experience with the managing of a business: running a team, hiring a team, all that kind of stuff, but building from the ground up is a whole different ball game, you know? Knowing how to go about everything from funding to getting all your paperwork in line, I didn’t want to shoulder all of that myself. With franchising there’s a process already set up, and it’s a turn-key operation. I’m not starting from level zero, I’m starting from level one or two. It knocks that beginning of the learning curve down a little bit.

What are you looking forward to most about owning a Shack Shine Franchise?

Control. [laughs] I like being in control of situations. If I need to take a day off, I have to make the decision if I can afford it or not, but it’s on me – it’s not you know, “sorry we need you in today, too bad”. For me it’s all about family, too, and having that ability to work around my schedule if I need to.Being type A, I’ll probably work 6 or 7 days a week anyways, at least for the first year. But I have the option. It’s all about control, and flexibility, and having time to spend with family.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?

I plan on being a million dollar business in 5 years.

Amazing. What would you say motivates you most in life?

I’m type A, I motivate myself! I don’t like not being number one, so that’s my motivation: to be the best at what I do, because that’s how I reward myself. I’m very competitive.

    Any passions outside of work?

I do a little bit of everything! I’ve been home-brewing beer for about 20 years now, so I have a pretty nice set up. I’m also a big reader – my goal is to read 52 books a year. Haven’t quite made it yet, 48 is my current record. That’s the goal. My mum reads one or two a day, so she kind of makes it hard to not aim high [laughs].

Finally, what makes  your territory Chicago unique?

It’s where I’m from. It’s family. It’s friends. It’s the whole reason I went back, to be close to friends and family. It’s about being back to my roots and with my mum and my sister, and her family. I would never leave Chicago if I didn’t have to, that’s who I am. I’m a hard-working die-hard sports fan just like everyone else here – and now I’m going to make their houses beautiful!

  3. Meet The Couple Who Drove 30 Hours To Launch Their Franchise

    Pinellas County North Franchise Partners

Justin and Kennady both had dreams of owning a business. But it was meeting each other that really lit their entrepreneurial fire, and after a 30 hour drive (!) they’re on the road to success, living and working in Pinellas County, FL, as the proud owners of a Shack Shine Franchise.

So, Justin and Kennady – what made you want to own a business?

K: Individually we wanted to own businesses before we met each other, and then meeting each other we kinda just lit a flame and went for it! Then we met the consultant, and just flew from there.

J: Yeah, we reached out to a franchise consultant and she gave us a few options – but it was Shack Shine that stood out. It was more practical, and a lot more put together than most other businesses. It seemed like there was going to be a lot more support, which was key for us.

    Why Shack Shine?

K: To be honest, it wasn’t until we came up to Vancouver to meet everyone that it really sealed the deal for us. Visiting O2E Brands and just seeing that it’s like a huge family, super organized, super systematic. That’s what did it for me personally.

J: Yeah there’s a lot of support here. And we never owned a business before. As first-time business owners, we wanted a brand that would support us and help when we did start up, because we don’t know what’s going to be thrown at us. Shack Shine did a great job of proving that there was going to be that support.

What was your background before this, what did you both do for work?

J: So I was in the military years ago. I went from there to Best Buy, and then I worked in HR for Best Buy for a couple of years before we decided that we wanted to move to Florida – and that starting a business was probably the best option to do that.

K: I actually just graduated college two years ago! After graduating I moved to Minneapolis for an internship, but started working in a tanning salon. Then I started managing that tanning salon. Then I started managing multiple of them. I also did a lot of coaching  – strengthening and conditioning was my priority career base, and I worked with a lot of athletic teams. I wanted to own a gym originally, actually, but I don’t think we would have had as much support running a gym versus working with Shack Shine.

What are you looking forward to most?

K: I think the family feel to it all, really. We have two other franchises around us already, in our area, which is a really good thing for us.

J: Honestly just owning a business. We wanted to own a business we just didn’t know what, or how. So even getting to own our own business and having something that we can call our own, that’s just amazing. We want to actually do something with our lives and help out our community in some way.

K: Yes, pride of ownership was a big thing.

How are you involved in your community?

K: Honestly, we just moved from Minneapolis to Florida via a 30 hour drive, so right now we don’t have a lot of ties to the community. But I’m getting in touch with a couple of high schools, as with my athletic background I would love to be able to help athletes again, so that might be an extra thing for me. Tutoring.

    You drove 30 hours?

K: Yes. 30 hours. We slept for 4 hours, woke up and did it again. 30 hours with a 4 hour break! That’s how excited we were to get down there and launch our franchise! [laughs].

What are your passions outside of work?

K: We love to go to breweries, honestly! We’re very much foodies, so if we have the opportunity to explore a new area it is very much based on food and drinks. We love exploring together.

J: Pretty much anything outside, we love anything outside. We kind of plan – once we are more established – we plan on starting up a friendly competition with the franchises in our area, our neighbouring franchises. It would be really fun to bring everyone together to play a kickball or soccer tournament or something.

What would you say are your main motivators in life and in business?

K: I mean, success in general drives me, but you can’t really measure success… there’s no cap. Basically, I’m always willing to try something new, and this is very much out of my comfort zone. But it does help somebody feel better, not about themselves, which is what my experience is in, but as a family. That’s something that really drives me.

J: I was always taught that you are a reflection of your work, so what you put into your work reflects back on to you. That’s always driven me.

  5. Orange County’s Franchise Partner On Why He’s So Excited To Build His Business

Bj Purviss, Shack Shine, Orange County

Meet BJ Purvis. A former sales and marketing guy, he dreamed of owning his own business – and when he found Shack Shine, he found the perfect fit. He loved the branding, the start-up culture, the support from existing Franchise Partners, and the reassurance of proven systems. Fuelled by a desire to show his children that ‘anything is possible’, he’s 100% committed to making the houses of Orange County a little shinier! (They have a lot of windows).

Hi, BJ – welcome to Shack Shine! What made you want to become a business owner?

I wanted to own my own destiny! I always knew I wanted to own my own business, but, and I know it sounds like a cliché, I didn’t want to be in business by myself – so I loved the franchise route. I looked at a whole lot of different franchise options, but Shack Shine was the one that stuck out.

Why was that? Why Shack Shine?

Originally I called about 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, and they told me that they have 3 other brands too. So I explored them, and I felt that Shack Shine was the place to be. I called around and was like, “man, there’s not one dominant market leader” – that was a big moment for me. The culture was huge in comparison to other franchises I looked at, too. It was almost like when you hear about Apple, and the Kodak days, y’know? I felt like all the other brands were going to get left behind. Shack Shine and O2E Brands, feels like the Apple of franchising – innovative, cutting-edge, with a brand culture that’s on the move and continuing to grow, not just resting on past success. It felt like the right fit, especially for Orange County. Shack Shine even sounds like a California brand!

And how has the process been, from that first call to opening your franchise?

It’s been great. It’s super thorough – step by step by step – but as a first time business owner I really like that, because it takes all the guesswork out of it. They get right down to the nitty gritty – how you set up, costs of goods… every little detail is measured out. The training has been awesome too. We’ve actually done live jobs which has been really helpful, and speaking to other Franchise Partners in the system has been so cool, they’re so supportive. Even after we spoke ‘officially’, they were texting me that weekend like, “hey, if you need any more advice or have any questions, feel free to text me”, and I found that spoke a lot to the culture in general. It wasn’t like “oh, we’ll speak to you this one time and that’s it”, it was more like they were going through the process with you.

What was your background prior to becoming a Shack Shine business owner?

Pretty much sales and marketing, I’ve done a lot of that. I think my sales background will help with getting out there and building my business. As Mark Cuban always says, ‘sales cures all’ – so in the back of my mind I know that if I can get the sales, everything else will fall into place.  I think my marketing background is also why I was so drawn to Shack Shine initially – they clearly had such a good brand. I’m excited to move on to a new chapter, and build something of my own!

On that note, what are you looking forward to most?

Again, probably just owning my own destiny. If you’re working a job you’re limited in how far you can go – owning your own thing in something that’s completely different. Shack Shine has this start-up culture, as I said, and it’s so exciting to think about how far this thing can go as a whole, and on a personal level how far I can take it. I would love to be around Orange County a few years from now and see trucks flying up and down the road, on the Pacific Coast Highway, as a standard part of the landscape. Like, “oh, there’s another Shack Shine truck!” That would be amazing.

What would you say to someone who was considering buying a Shack Shine franchise?

I would say, do it! For sure. Their systems are hands down better than everybody else, especially for first time owners. They’ve had proven success, too, with 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. I’m not sure who said it, but I like the phrase: “somebody can’t take you where they haven’t been”, and there’s a lot of franchise systems out there who haven’t been to the top level like O2E Brands have. When you’ve got someone who has already done it, you know that they can do it again with Shack Shine, so I’m excited about that.

How are you involved in your community?

I’m involved in my church pretty big – I coach life group leaders. I like helping the elderly too – I’ve volunteered with orgs that pair you up with older citizens to just chat with them and play games and give back that way. I’ve also done some beach clean ups, because I’m such a beach guy. I’m a huge surfer so any time I get to do that, I’m in the water.

What are your main motivators in life and in business?

To show my kids that anything is possible, and that if there’s a dream they have to go after it – don’t be afraid, put one foot in front of the other and keep going. I want to show them what I can do, and I want to look back one day and see that I’ve created this thing that I, and they, can be proud of.

Finally, tell us about your territory, Orange County – what makes it unique?

Well, we have a LOT of windows [laughs]. I think it’s the best place to live in America, personally. There’s so much to do, with surfing, snowboarding, vineyards… you can go to the mountains and the beach in the same day – it’s incredible. A huge thing for Orange County is also the pride of home ownership. People are really excited to live here, so they are really meticulous about their houses. Also there’s the time thing – there’s a lot of people that are successful, and they’re working hard all day and all night – so I think that Shack Shine will be a big hit. We can step in and free up their time, and help make their houses a little shinier! And yes, I watched the show – don’t tell anybody.

  6. An Insider’s Guide to Buying a Home Services Franchise

So you’re ready to take control of your future by investing in a franchise. It probably feels equal parts exciting and daunting, but you’ve done some research, and know that buying a franchise gives you the best of both worlds: the freedom to be your own boss, with the back-end systems and support of a trusted brand to set you up for success.

Now what? Buying a franchise can seem like a complex process, but knowledge is power, and preparation is key.

Why Choose a Home Services Franchise?

The exterior cleaning industry is valued at $10 billion dollars annually, with 5% year-over-year growth for the past five years – so there’s that. There’s also the strong profit margins, high-demand and recurring revenue model that make home services such a valuable option.

Shack Shine has taken this a step further, by uniting several fragmented industries with no clear market leader under a one-stop shop: ‘house detailing’. The services aren’t new, but the way we’re innovating a space that’s been around for forever – that is.

Being in the house detailing business means you’ll have multiple revenue streams ensuring jobs on your schedule all year round, from window washing in the spring and roof cleaning in the summer, to gutter cleaning in the fall and installing Christmas lights in the winter.

The best part? All of these revenue streams repeat season after season and year after year, so that you can build a loyal, long-term customer base, and predictable, recurring revenue.

You also have the unique opportunity to up-sell: a gutter cleaning appointment could be expanded to include power-washing a deck, for example. Or perhaps your team will convert someone into a future Christmas lights customer – the possibilities are endless.

And for someone like you, who’s hungry to break free from the 9-5 and get started, choosing a franchise business means that a lot of the legwork has been done for you, so that you can be operational and booking jobs within a couple of months.

    So… what next?

The first step is getting in contact with your chosen brand – Shack Shine or otherwise, for information on what types of opportunities are available in your market. Our Franchise Development Managers do this with a simple phone call.

Next is a deeper conversation around your background and experience, to determine if you’re the right fit for the brand, and if the brand is the right fit for you.

The third step is more of a stage – the due diligence stage. This will help you understand the market conditions in the territory you’re interested in and what success could look like for you. Shack Shine follows up with a financial forecast tool and arranges calls with existing franchise partners, so that you can ask about their experiences.

The fourth and final step is when you’re awarded your franchise, can sign your legal documents, pay your initial franchise fees, and begin your new life as a business owner!

Owning a franchise means that you are part of something bigger and that you’re set up for success, but it still takes hard work, grit, and good leadership skills to get your business off the ground. It won’t be easy and it won’t be luck – but it’ll be yours to build, yours to own, and yours to make a success.

A passionate family man, with a keen eye for detail, Nathan Wingate is the proud owner of Shack Shine Austin. Read more below to learn a little bit about Nathan and how he decided that Shack Shine was the Franchise for him.

Why did you choose to join Shack Shine?

I’ve looked at a lot of franchises over the past few years and without fail they are either sold out or they aren’t worth investing in. Shack Shine was unique in that it was new enough to have open territories but by being part of the O2E family of brands, it had the backing of an established brand like 1-800-GOT-JUNK?

I also really believed in the business model of home detailing. Before I found Shack Shine, had been thinking about starting my own business in the space.

Finally, I did a ton of research on Shack Shine as a brand. I read Google and Yelp reviews from all over the country and time and time again the reviews were positive and customers were raving about the service they received. I knew this was a company I could partner with to create something great in Austin.

What was your background prior to Shack Shine?

My background is a mix of technology and construction. I’ve worked in IT, built homes, and created a number of businesses over the years. I’ve done everything from painting homes to creating software for contractors. I love bringing new technology and systems to the old industry of contracting.

What are you looking forward to most about being a Shack Shine business owner?

I’m most passionate about providing great customer service to our clients. That’s what drew me to the Shack Shine brand in the first place. I know that if we put our customers at the center of our business, and treat them well, then everything else will fall into place.

What are your passions outside of work?

I’m married and I have four kids. Any time I get to spend with them is what gets me most excited.

How are you involved with your community?

I serve at my local church in the children’s ministry. I’ve been doing that for about 10 years and I love it.

Do you have any role models or key motivators in your life?

When it comes to business, I believe in people over profits and treating others better than yourself. When you can have that mentality with your customers and employees everything else falls into place.

    What makes Austin unique?

Austin is one of the more unique places to live in the country. It’s a great mix of friendly people and a laid back culture. Not to mention the amazing food and music. I may be partial but I think it’s one of the best places to live in the country.

Why did you choose to join Shack Shine?

Exterior house cleaning is an industry that desperately needs to be professionalized. I loved their branding and their focus on completely rethinking how exterior house cleaning services should be delivered to the customer.

What was your background prior to Shack Shine?

Prior to Shack Shine, I was doing digital marketing for an online gaming company. While I enjoyed what I was doing, Shack Shine provided me with an opportunity to pursue my entrepreneurial dream, and to connect more closely with my customers.

What are you looking forward to most about being a Shack Shine business owner?

I’m excited to professionalize and bring a fresh solution to a problem that many homeowners in my area deal with. From a personal standpoint, it’s exciting to know that every ounce of energy I put into the business is ultimately paving my way towards a successful career serving customers, and working for myself.

What are your passions outside of work?

I love golfing and being outside. Living in Tampa allows me to enjoy the outdoors all year round. When indoors, I like to pursue creative projects that have to do with web design.

How are you involved with your community?

I like to explore different restaurants and events around Tampa with my wife and dog. It’s such a   young city that it’s exciting to discover new things it has to offer. Professionally, I like to remain close to the local chamber of commerce. My goal is to build a strong reputation amongst the city and to ultimately look to give back to local charities and events when I can.

Do you have any role models or key motivators in your life?

I’d say my path in life would have been much harder if my Dad hadn’t taught me the value of hard work, commitment, and grit. He’s definitely been a role model and someone I couldn’t thank enough for his hard work, and the principles he’s shared with me throughout my life. My Mom has also been such a staple in my life. I like to be sure that whatever I’m doing, it’s something I know they’d be proud of.

    What makes Tampa unique?

Tampa is a complete gem of a city. It seems as though there’s a new restaurant, hangout, or festival that’s sprouting up every week. It’s practically always sunny, it’s located right on the water, and the people are very friendly. What more could you ask for? I couldn’t be happier living here. I like to say it’s the San Diego of the east coast.

Fun facts about you, or anything else you’d like to share?

My favorite sport is baseball, I played it all the way through college. Growing up in the northeast, I became a fortunate diehard fan of Boston sports. One very odd fact — I’ve never had a headache. I should probably see a Doctor…

Help us welcome Zachary to the Shack Shine family!
